For years now, we’ve been hearing that skin care products are the key to achieving perfect skin. Countless advertisements and influencers have showcased the latest and greatest creams, serums, and masks as the answer to all our skin woes. But have you ever stopped to question whether relying solely on skincare products is actually the best way to achieve a healthy, glowing complexion? I constantly receive emails and see commercials promoting a new line of miracle products, and it got me thinking: people need to know it is not all in skin care products.

I mean it is as if they want us to believe in this instant gratification that if we apply some serum, or leave on a mask, our face will instantly look flawless. But here’s the thing, my friend - relying solely on skincare products ain’t always the answer!

Trust me, I know from experience. Years ago, when I was desperate for acne relief I went straight to the drug store and loaded up on skin care products that promised the dream of clear skin. I tried to perfect my skin with every fancy skincare product out there, but my complexion wasn't having it. It left me feeling frustrated, confused, and poor (some of those products were expensive!).

But fear not, my fellow skincare lovers! There is a better way to achieve that healthy, radiant glow we all crave. I'm here to share my knowledge from my journey and some awesome tips to get you on the right path to glowing skin from the inside out. So let's get started!

What’s Not So Great About Using Skin Care Products Alone And Expecting Perfect Skin

Here’s the thing. Relying solely on skincare products isn't a good idea because there are several reasons why it may not work out as planned. For instance, you may end up wasting a lot of time, energy, and money on products (like I did),  that don't deliver the desired results. And worst of all, relying solely on skincare products may actually backfire and cause more harm than good to your skin (ie: too harsh of ingredients, not for your skin type, etc…)

If that's not enough to convince you, studies have shown that skincare products alone are not enough to give you flawless skin. According to Dr. Neera Nathan a dermatologist and researcher at Massachusetts General Hospital and Lahey Hospital and Medical Center, lifestyle factors such as stress levels have a significant impact on skin health and your skin barrier. And this Verywell Health article talks about environmental factors as well that should be accounted for as part of skin health.

So, what can you do to achieve that healthy, radiant glow? Fortunately, there's a better way. Instead of relying solely on skincare products, focus on cultivating a holistic skincare routine incorporating lifestyle changes and stress-management techniques. This could include eating a balanced diet rich in nutrients, staying hydrated, getting enough sleep, and reducing stress through meditation or exercise. All these things play a big role in the appearance of our skin.

With a holistic approach to skin care, you can achieve just that. And the best part? It doesn't have to be overwhelming or confusing. With a little guidance and some lifestyle adjustments, you can achieve the healthy, glowing complexion you've always wanted.

A Better Way to Achieve A Healthy, Glowing Complexion

Here is what you can do to achieve clearer, healthier skin and not just focus on skin care products.

Step #1:  Understand Your Skin Type and Needs

The first step in a holistic skincare routine is understanding your skin type and specific needs. This means identifying whether your skin is oily, dry, or combination, as well as any concerns you may have such as acne, fine lines, or dark spots. By understanding your skin type and needs, you can select products and techniques that work specifically for you. Be sure to avoid any potential harm from using too strong of an ingredient or chemical and I would suggest staying away from abrasive scrubs. When starting out, look for gentle products made for sensitive skin, and then you can scale up from there.

Step #2: Embrace a Holistic Skincare Routine

A holistic skincare routine involves more than just using skincare products, as you may know by now. It also includes caring for your body from the inside out by staying hydrated, eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and getting enough sleep. In addition, keeping up with good quality skin care products can all be great modalities to better skin. By taking a holistic approach to skincare, you are not only addressing the surface of your skin but also nourishing it from within.

Step #3: Prioritize Sun Protection

One of the most important steps in any skincare routine is sun protection. Exposure to the sun's harmful UV rays can cause damage to the skin, leading to premature aging, dark spots, and an increased risk of skin cancer. Always wear broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to protect your skin. Many don’t realize, most sunscreens are only active for about 90 minutes so it is important to reapply throughout the day.  Sunscreen is a favorite topic of mine because it is so important and is needed in ALL skin care routines, yet commonly dismissed.  If you need help choosing the right sunscreen for you, check out my blog where I get into the specifics of sunscreen and which is best to choose.

Step #4: Be Patient and Consistent

Achieving a healthy, glowing complexion takes time and consistency. It's important to be patient and stick to your skincare routine even if you don't see immediate results. I know you have heard people saying “consistency is key” and it really is true. By making skincare a part of your daily routine, you can achieve noticeable improvements and results.
